Extract from Grade 2 Listing description :
Former vicarage, now detached house. c1838. Ashlar and coursed rubble limestone; ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey, double pile plan.
Information on previous owners gained from documents :
1838 Rev C Barker licensed as curate with a stipend of £40 and a glebe house.
The church provided the house for incumbents of Oakridge church from 1838 – 1976
1978 The diocese of Gloucester sold the property to Mr H W and Mrs R M Wiggin
Information on occupants from documents and reminiscences of local people:
1835 Thomas Keble purchased from Thomas Restall/Baker parcels of land including
- 2 roods and 28 perches formerly part of enclosure called Upper Cox. A portion of this was afterwards conveyed by Thomas Keble for the new church at Oakridge and the burial ground.
- grove of wood called Upper Cox Grove containing 3 roods and 8 perches
- site of 2 messuages or cottages now partly pulled down called Hicks or Enneyes with gardens belonging and the weaving looms therein containing one eighth of an acre.
This was purchased from Henard and Elizabeth Gardiner in 1837 and the cottages were converted into stable and stableyard with coach house.
1851 Benefaction Deed grants and conveys to the curate of the curacy of Oakridge and his successors “all the messuage or dwellinghouse with the stable, coach house and other office buildings and the yards, gardens, lawn, plantation and pleasure grounds....containing in the whole 1 acre, 1 rood and 36 perches...deliniated in the map (attached) Later addition of matching design soon after the initial building (see photo)
1889 Additional land given to Ecclesiastical commissioners for England - 1 acre and 16 perches bounded on south west by vicarage garden, on the north by the high road leading from the church gate into Oakridge Lynch village, on the other part of the north by the garden of the schoolmaster's house and the garden of James Halliday's house and garden, owned by Charles Driver and on the east and south east by the road to Gurners Farm and a field of Twissels Farm (map attached)
Lloyd George Survey records Old Vicarage and stable 433 as “Stone and tile house: 1st floor 5 bedrooms, dressing room, 2 box rooms, laundry and passage, ground floor hall, drawing room,dining room, study, kitchen, pantry and scullery, cellar in basement, boarded and galvanised servants hall, 2....”
1978 Conservatory at back garden erected and extensive internal alterations
