Caves and Collapses
Title
Caves and Collapses
Description
Much of the stone for construction was taken from 'underground' quarrying which created caves in all sorts of places. Indeed, one cottage in Oakridge, is named after the cave used to quarry its stone 'Cave Cottage'.
Those 'caves' are often both hidden and forgotten but are sometimes uncovered during construction or through a collapse which appears at the surface. One such collapse some years ago was by the crossroads / Hillbrae at the entry to the village.
These photos record the 'cave' that was uncovered at the time.
