Description

A rolled up document was on stiff parchment paper.

One side of the document is an indenture for the lease of some land in Bisley from Thomas Baker to Thomas Blanch, for seven years. The date on the document is 1814. The edges of the paper have been cut down and the reverse used for a plan and notes of excavations of the roman villa in 1841. The plan is dated 1843, The writing is faded and some words cannot be made out, but the following is what can be read of the notes.

"A plan of the Church Piece October, 1841. In this field the property of Thomas Baker of Watercombe in the Parish of Bisley called the Church Piece near Jilly Gate an extensive range of Roman Chambers whose communications with each other were distinctly marked, and in which a part exhibited the supports and bases of tessellated floors. They were mounded on both sides by a wall of great thickness, but the limits of the whole have not yet been ascertained.

There were various sorts of ancient cement brickwork, there were picked up many fragments of red and coloured glazed pottery having various figures on them. Antique glass, many little implements such as tweezers etc.

The root of a staghorn of unusual size and a quantity of stags sheep and other bones, and two perfect sacrificing knives.

On the sixth day of October in 1841 on the outside of the wall at, on this plan not more than six inches below the surface was a round earthenware pot almost fit fitting a globe of metal which was in fact a  concretian of coins.

The number was 1223. Some are preserved in the state of cohesion they were found in.

It forms a complete series of Roman (brass) mostly in the best preservation from the reigns of to Discletian inclusive to the Roman British Emporers or least those who are not usually reckoned in the Imperial list.

They are most abundantly those of (Cenricus) and Victerinus, nest to them of Gulliemus, Claudius and Poshemus, Tacitus, Probius, Aurelian, Maximum, Florian, Carinus, Diccletian, (Sebanina) orium, Carus, Marius, Severina, Calenian, Quintillus and Cuvesius.
