Woodside Cottage

Title

Woodside Cottage

Description

Information on previous owners gained from documents :
(some title deeds, and declaration in 1972 by Kathleen Mary Dangerfield, daughter of Frank Wright, regarding absence of boundary disputes)

Richard Gardiner of Oakridge Lynch died intestate in 1864 and his son Cyrus Gardiner was granted possession in 1865.

Cyrus died intestate in 1901 and the estate was granted to his son Tom Gardiner in 1902 and he kept the property until 1903 when he sold it for £60 to Mercy Elizabeth Bailey of Chiswick in Surrey.

Lloyd George Survey 1910 records Eli Gardiner as both owner and occupier of “Cottage 372 Stone & tile cottage: 1 bedroom, living room and pantry lean-to, stone & tile washhouse, stone & tile shed and EC, garden” but this ownership does not accord with other records.

On death of Mercy Elizabeth Bailey in 1955* her daughter Lucy Ellen Bailey sold the property for £310 to Frank Wright of Crofts Hill. He died in 1972 and is buried in the Methodist Chapel graveyard.

The property was then sold for £8,850 to David and Pamela Castle in 1972. They were relatives of Mavis and Sid Short of Lydas Cottage but only used the house for weekend visits.

*Note that Mercy Elizabeth Bailey 'of Whiteway' was buried in the Methodist Chapel in May 1955
