Daneway Canal Complex

Description

Pictures  L - R, T - B:

1. Daneway, c. 1905, looking from the Sawmill house over the wharf basin to Siccaridge Wood in the winter. The track to the left parallels the canal. It crosses it at Whitehall Bridge to go up to Trillies and Far Oakridge.

2. Daneway Wharf, Lock and Bridge, c. 1905. The gates of Summit Lock are shown through Daneway Bridge. The Bricklayers Arms (now the Daneway Inn) is on the left. The horse wagon appears to be carrying sacks of grain or flour.

3. c. 1905. A good Edwardian scene, with tree trunks lined up on the side of the road ready for the sawmill, which is down to the right.

The mill was originally water powered but later converted to steam power due to the irregular water supply from the River Frome. The Bricklayer's Arms public house is in the background.

4. c. 1910. A busy scene looking across Daneway Bridge. The sawmill is in operation and the two-horse wagon about to cross the bridge has probably come down to take away sawn timber.

The lack of commercial traffic on the canal soon after this date hastened the closure of the sawmill, as it was fairly dependent on canal transport for heavy timber loads both in and out.

5,6. Two views of Daneway Wharf, the first from 1914 and the second c. 1905. The first of these views is from the Tunley Road across the wharf, with an empty basin. The wharf cottage would have been the home of the Peart family. Mr Peart was carter for the Daneway sawmill, whose buildings are across the road from the cottage. The tall chimney of the sawmill can just be seen. In the second view Sapperton village is visible on the skyline.
