Bakers Mill Locks

Title

Bakers Mill Locks

Description

Photographs L - R, T - B:

1. Bakers Mill Lock c. 1885. The upper gate beams are on the right. The canal reservoir, built by the Canal Company, stretches east on the left.

2. A view over Bakers Mill towards Frampton Mansell, looking from below Oakridge church, with Bakers Mill in the bottom right-hand corner and the lock immediately to its right. Bakers Mill House is partly hidden by the grassy bank. In the trees, lower centre, is Frampton Farm with Hattons above it.

The railway viaduct is clearly visible and to its right is the roof of Frampton Manor House. Here the railway has a gradient of one in sixty which made it a favourite viewing point for steam train enthusiasts.

3. c. 1900 a view east over Bakers Mill Bridge and Lock.

The view shows the canal reservoir in the background, which is now a private lake at Bakers Mill House. The reservoir was constructed by the Thames & Severn Canal Co. to guarantee a supply of water to the locks below.

The reservoir was fed by the Frome as well as small streams from sources around Oakridge. Bakers Mill House is on the left with the end of the mill building at the extreme left.

A small wharf above the lock was used to unload coal for Oakridge Mill, the coal being delivered to the mill by horse wagons and by donkey.

4. This view shows Bakers Mill Upper Lock and reservoir in c. 1920.

The lock is in the left-foreground. Coal was brought up to this lock for both Bakers and Oakridge Mills. Above the lock gates on the right was a small coal yard.

5. A
bove Bakers Mill, this c. 1912 view from the towpath looking west towards Bakers Mill, with the canal to the left and the reservoir to the right. The houses on the left are Hattons and Little Hattons.

6. A more recent scene from above Bakers Mill in 1976, looking west down the canal and the valley the buildings of Bakers Mill are in the centre. The canal and the reservoir over to the right are both full to overflowing due to the rain and floods that followed the 1976 drought.
