Boultings (Bakers Mill Lower) Lock

Title

Boultings (Bakers Mill Lower) Lock

Description

Pictures L - R, T - B:

1. This view was taken c. 1905, looking towards Bakers Mill. Below this lock the canal was sufficiently wide to turn a barge.

During the First World War the adjacent woods were felled and loaded onto barges at this point and taken down to Bourne where the cargo was offloaded onto railway wagons at Brimscombe sidings for transport to South Wales as pit props.

2. From c. 1910 this view above Boulting Lock shows a stretch known as the 'Conk', as it had been concreted by the Canal Trust around 1900. Bakers Mill is framed between the trees on the left, with the roof of Hattons showing above the trees.

Above Boultings Lock:

3, 4. Early pictures showing the pond above Boultings Lock towards Bakers Mill Lock.

Both pictures show the pond between Boultings Lock and Bakers Mill Lock before (1895) and after (1900) reconstruction by the Thames & Severn Canal Trust in 1897.

5. Above Boultings Lock, c. 1902 view west from Frampton Farm in winter.

The view shows the flooded meadows and the canal sweeping round into Boultings Lock to the left. During the First World War, around 1917, the Old Hills Woods on the right were felled for pit props.

The trees were dragged to the river bank where a temporary bridge was built across the river so that the cut-up trees could be loaded onto barges which turned in the pound below the lock. The barges took the pit props to near the Bourne boatyard where they were loaded onto railway wagons in the West Box sidings.
