'Whats On' was originally produced by typing on a mechanical typewriter and then reproduced in quantity on coloured paper by 'Banda' machines (also called 'spirit duplicators' - remember those inky messy things beloved by schools and the like!).

This means that the copies we have today, which were often none to clear when new, have typically faded a little. In scanning and capturing them into PDF's, which you can read by clicking on them, we have used modern techniques to improve their readability, for example by enhancing the contrast.

However, as the type is very poor and inconsistent we have been unsucessful in using automated techniques such as OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to extract the text into clear documents whose content can be searched automatically using this site.

Nevertheless, they mostly remain easily readable as a fascinating record of village life.
